Ministry of Lesbian Affairs

Rating: 5 out of 5.

When I saw the @criteriontheatre was doing a zoom play reading of this production back in May 2023 I completely freaked out, playing a multitude of these characters on a zoom for 2 hours made me feel so safe in a new space where I was still keeping part of my identity on the down-low.

And that ironically enough is a similar premise brought to the play itself! Ana and Lori have been together for 7 years, Lori being a black butcher lesbian from a highly religious family made her remain in the closet so Ana encourages her to join the local lesbian choir (the only one in the country?!) to help her feel more safe and seen in her identity.

The play couldn’t feel more modern to today’s political climate in the UK and brings out the tough conversations that happen both in and out of the LGBTQ+ community; accessibility in LGBTQ+ spaces, trans people and the struggles they face and the increased amount of transphobia and lesphobia in today’s society.

This play is the definition of a laugh one minute, cry the next. I remembered some of the plot (especially of what unfolds in act 2) but forgot the majority of the details, the cast bring this story to life so well and I haven’t even mentioned THEIR VOICES MY GOD! The seven of them together acapella is the meaning of angelic and this show deserves more than a month long run can ever do.

Ministry sadly finishes its run at the Kiln on the 14th July after extending for 2 more performances and is set to sell out so get moving if you want to catch the final seats!
