Constellations

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Imagine rolling a dice 6000 times, each with different timelines of every single decision in your life. How will things play out differently and how drastically could it change if you just changed one thing? One thing that doesn’t change is The Loft’s quality of productions. Back with its second show of 2025, Nick Payne’s ever popular ‘Constellations’.

Directed by Sue Moore, this psychological love story is played out by Ted McGowan (the empathetic, patient Roland) and Leonie Slater (the confident, self assured Marianne) each have tread the board at this theatre dozens of times between them and provide stunningly beautiful performances throughout with chemistry and physical comedy the West End revivals can be jealous of.

This 80 minute play expertly goes back and forth between the moment they met at a friends BBQ and the life they follow together (or apart) in everyday conversations from soggy BBQs to honey in bin bags and string theory after a very drunken night out.

As we follow the different pathways their life could take it doesn’t just focus on the comedy. It also focuses on the reality that many young couples face with illness and the tough decisions you make as it progresses, for better and for worse. A storyline that doesn’t really get talked about and the piece does it in such a sensitive and subtle way with different parts of the conversation mentioned even towards the beginning of the play when we don’t know why or how they got there in the first place which brought curiosity and a fly on the wall take on these two lives.

One of the scenes also weaves in British Sign Language in such a creative way with consultation from Renata Conduit. Something I didn’t expect going in but really appreciated, it would have been lovely to see it throughout as that particular storyline carried on with signing some words but not others as they try to figure out what to say to each other.

Ted, Leonie, Sue and the whole team blew the audience away and you only have until the 8th March to experience it yourself so get your tickets now! 🌌💙
