Importance of Being Earnest

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

In Wilde’s comedic masterpiece, Algernon (Ncuti Gatwa) and Jack (Hugh Skinner) but weave through their own family tree of lies to win the hearts of Cecily and Gwendolin and the trust of their families

The chaos this play is, with its constant comedic twists and turns with brilliant physical comedy, a soundtrack Bridgerton would be jealous of and incredible performances all round. Constant fourth wall breaks to the audience sent the whole theatre into a frenzy on multiple occasions. Making fun of itself and theatre culture in general, this is Earnest in the queerest imagining possible which leaves no plot stone unturned.

As you know I love the technical aspects of a show and the set design was no exception. Elaborate interiors of 2 different manors and a gorgeous quaint garden with its small hills that were the constant joke of the comedy was amazing as well as the costumes?! The most insanely talented costume team I have ever seen on any production including the curtain call costumes and the quickness of the changes that would put the traditional British Panto to shame!

The National Theatre is screening the show into cinemas world wide into March and if your local cinema has it, do not miss it. Screening sell out shows like this to a global scale makes theatre more accessible as some of these are also captioned (which was the screening I went to at the Arena). Long story short, go see this show!
